In the documentary film “Chris Brown: Welcome to My Life,” the American singer opens up about the truth surrounding the incident where he assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna, which made headlines nearly 8 years ago.
Chris Brown reveals the truth about the night of the assault, saying, “She hit me and blood came out of my mouth.”
According to Chris Brown, the couple started dating when they were teenagers. Their relationship quickly became serious. After nearly 8 months of dating, Chris decided to confess to Rihanna that he had been with another woman before they got together.
However, since Chris Brown had previously denied any involvement with another woman, Rihanna lost trust in her boyfriend. He recounted, “She hated me after that. I tried everything to make amends, but she didn’t care. She no longer trusted me. From then on, everything went downhill. We argued, even fought, on both sides. This is the first time I’m speaking out. She hit me, and I hit her back. It was horrible.”
The 28-year-old star said there were times when they both wanted to stop the conflict: “There were moments when we asked ourselves, ‘What are we doing?’. I told her that I didn’t like the way she kept hitting me like that. Every time there was a scratch on my face when I went on stage, I had to explain that it was from a fall. When there was a scar or bruise, I had to use makeup to cover it up. I never intentionally hurt any woman. I felt like a monster.”
At the Clive Davis’ Grammy event in 2009, a woman Chris Brown had been involved with approached him and Rihanna, causing her to become angry and cry. Chris said he had no knowledge of the woman’s presence at the event. He recounted, “The event was about to start, but she (Rihanna) kept crying. Then she stopped and started drinking. We both had a little to drink. We were tipsy, joking around, and then left.”‘
While in the car, Rihanna suddenly saw a text message from the woman who had been involved with Chris Brown. This made Rihanna believe that Chris knew the woman would be at the event. Chris explained, “She started getting mad. She threw her phone and cursed, ‘I hate you.’ She hit me a few more times.”
At that moment, Chris Brown was driving and couldn’t hold back. He recalled, “I remember she tried to kick me, but then I hit her back with a real punch. I made her lip split. When I saw the injury, I was shocked, wondering why I had hit her. She sat there and spit blood on my face, which made me even angrier.”
Chris Brown later pulled over to the side of the road to try to resolve their argument. He said, “She took out the keys and pretended to throw them out of the car. I got out to find the keys. Then, she suddenly screamed, ‘Help, he’s trying to kill me.'”
After the incident, Chris admitted to the assault in court and received a suspended sentence. Rihanna also had to face the emotional turmoil of ending her first love. In 2012, she tearfully shared, “I lost my best friend. Everything changed completely after that night. I couldn’t control it. I couldn’t even understand or express my emotions in front of the camera when the whole world was watching me.”
