A$AP Rocky, From TɾσublеԀ YσutҺ to Millionaire Rapper, Partner of the World’s Wealthiest Female Singer

According to The Guardian, A$AP Rocky’s youth was marked by turbulent years. At the age of 12, the rapper’s father was imprisoned for drug trafficking. A year later, Rocky’s older brother was ƙιlled by those involved in the drug trade.

At the age of 13, the young boy lived with his mother and sister, often moving around in homeless shelters. Due to their impoverished circumstances, Rocky himself was involved in drug trafficking and spent two weeks in Rikers Island. At that time, A$AP Rocky shared a cell with rapper Casanova.

“The truth is, most rappers have sold drugs at some point in their lives. I hate that because I’ve been through something similar,” he told The Independent.

Having experienced a challenging childhood, Rocky empathizes with those facing difficulties. Before Thanksgiving in 2020, the rapper visited the Regent Family Residence, where his family had once lived when they were homeless, and donated 120 meals, inspiring underprivileged children with the story of his own life.

“In life, there are many tough moments, but it’s not the end of the world. We create that, and we have to find a way to solve it. It’s not easy,” A$AP Rocky said.

A$AP Rocky’s real name is Rakim Mayer. He was named after the legendary rapper Rakim, a member of the famous 1980s group Eric B. & Rakim.

In 2012, Rocky and Rakim met on a radio program on Hot 97. However, the singer mentioned that their encounter had been more than 20 years in the making. This happened when his mother saw Rakim in Harlem. She asked the famous rapper to sign her son’s diaper, and that child grew up to be the famous A$AP Rocky.

Rocky began getting into rap at the age of nine, thanks to his older brother Ricky. When his brother passed away, Rocky decided to pursue rap as a way to honor his memory. He also adopted his distinctive braided hairstyle, inspired by his brother.

“Even though my brother’s gone, his heartbeat is in me, the passion for rap flows in my veins. He helped me realize I had to grow up and get a real job,” Rocky said in a television program.
