Rihanna and her partner first met in the early 2010s, and he was the opening act for her Diamonds World Tour in 2013.

The singer previously had an on-again, off-again romance with Chris Brown, with whom she split up for the first time in 2009 after he physically assaulted her, for which he was sentenced to five years probation.
