‘This Is That Yacht Music’ is Rick Ross’s exclusive declaration of love for Phil Collins and Gloria Estefan

47-year-old rap star has always liked a good sample flip. What about the old songs that he likes to listen to? Ross told PEOPLE about the music on his personal playlists that would surprise his fans. Ross is talking about his new album with Meek Mill called Too Good to Be True. He even shows proof on his phone.

“It’s too simple. Ross says, “This is that yacht music right here—Phil Collins, ‘In the Air Tonight.'” He then turns up the volume.

“So when I talk about that sound, I know where to draw from,” he says. “I know where to find ideas from.” It’s where I need it to be. Records that will last forever. What kind of mood do I want to create when I talk about records that are 40 or 30 years old? I was able to keep going.

After talking about “Hang On to Your Love” by Sade and “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” by PM Dawn, Ross also says that Gloria Estefan’s music is one of his favorites.

“Hi, welcome to Miami! Do you feel me? That is just that Miami s— from the top down. Drop the top. In fact, don’t bring the top with you. Don’t just let it down. Do not bring it home. It can’t even go back up. He says, “F— it.” “That’s Miami.”

The duo Cool & Dre did the song “Go to Hell,” which is on Ross’s new album. It samples “Shout” by Tears for Fears. In the 1980s, Ross says, the song and the European music scene as a whole caught on “possibly different than anywhere else” in Miami.

“I’m a young kid then, but when you look at all the TV shows that was based out of Miami, and being in Miami, it was no way around it,” he shares. If you weren’t from Miami and watched Miami Vice, you would have seen them riding in Ferraris. That’s what went with Ferraris. “Man, I hate that European sound.”

“But most definitely, that European music scene in Miami was… The same way the Latin scene was in Miami, the European music scene was in Miami,” he says. “So Tears for Fears, most definitely, that s— was like 2 Live Crew.”
