In recent weeks, Lil Yachty has gotten increasingly vocal about the status of hip-hop, saying that he thinks he’s a far better rapper than “a lot” of his colleagues at the moment.

Lil Boat demonstrated his rap prowess and showcased his ice collection on his Instagram Story on Wednesday, December 6. He also challenged anyone who want it to a duel.

Lil Yachty isn’t too happy with the condition of hip-hop these days, despite his insistence that he’s a better rapper than most.

During a conversation at a Rolling Stone Musicians on Musicians gathering in Brooklyn in November, he stated: “There is a lot of imitation in hip hop right now. There is a lot of hastily produced, subpar music available. There is much less creativity and risk-taking. Nowadays, people are too safe. Everyone is really secure. I would rather take the chance than fail.

Yachty immediately faced criticism for his remarks, but not long after, he reiterated them.

“The crazy thing is the numbers.” Hip Hop was first on the list. In a subsequent episode of his podcast, A Safe Place, he stated, “The number-one leading genre for more than ten years—shitting on every other genre up until recently, about a year ago or two, and it fell in the rankings of being number one.”

Even record labels have reduced their financial support for hip-hop musicians, as evidenced by the contracts and budgets they give them. Funding has been reduced for everything. It’s the truth, he insisted.

“The truth is that people aren’t supporting Hip Hop as much as they used to because there is a decline in content,” he said.
