Following allegations of brand neglect and bigotry, a beverage giant severes its relationship with Diddy

Diageo dissolved its association with Sean “Diddy” Combs on Wednesday after the musician accused it of disregarding their business arrangement and bigotry.

On June 1, Combs, aka Puff Daddy, P.Diddy, and Diddy, alleged in a New York court filing that the UK-based corporation neglected to invest in his booze brands because he is black.

He said that Diageo “kneecapped” Ciroc Vodka and DeLeon Tequila by denying them of resources after they were “typecasted” as “black brands” for “urban” consumers. The British multinational was “saddened” that the 53-year-old rapper, actor, and producer misrepresented a commercial conflict. A Diageo representative stated Wednesday: “Mr Combs’ bad-faith conduct breached his obligations, forcing us to reject his unfounded case and sever our business partnership.

“Mr Combs has repeatedly undermined our partnerships and threatened to publicly defame Diageo if we did not meet his unreasonable financial demands.” The representative stated Diageo invested over $100 million on Combs’ brands to grow them. After buying Hollywood-favorite tequila brand DeLeon in 2014, the drinks company launched a 50:50 joint venture with Combs Wine & Spirits.

In 2007, they partnered with Combs to grow Ciroc. The statement added: “Mr. Combs contributed $1 000 and broke his promises despite making a billion dollars over 15 years. “We have exhausted every reasonable remedy and see no other path forward. Combs did not respond immediately. Combs’ lawsuit claimed that Diageo prioritized and supported other celebrity-backed businesses including George Clooney’s Casamigos and Ryan Reynolds’ Aviation Gin and refused to invest in his. “Diageo has treated Mr Combs and his brands worse than others because he is black,” it said.
